As Festivals Approach, the Hearts of Nepalese Abroad Ache: 'Memories of the Village Haunt Us'

Kathmandu: As the excitement for grand festivals like Dashain and Tihar begins in Nepal, the hearts of millions of Nepalese living abroad for employment and study have started to grow heavy. While the Malashree dhun plays in the villages and the joy of traditional swings fills the air, Nepalese across the seven seas are bound by the necessity to stay busy with their regular jobs and duties. At a time when they should be at home with their families, enjoying festive delicacies and celebrations, those scattered across the Gulf nations, Europe, America, and Australia are forced to limit the festivals to mere memories. These hands that sustain the country's economy often become emotional when they find their own foreheads empty during the festivals. A young man working abroad shares his experience, "It is not easy to get leave here. Watching the family receive tika together on a video call makes it very difficult to keep my composure."

While technological advancements have made it easier to stay connected with families, they cannot provide the warmth of physical presence. Nepalese abroad now receive blessings virtually by chatting with their families over video calls. Even if they get time off, although local Nepalese communities attempt to gather and celebrate abroad, most workers are forced to continue their regular work even on the main festival days. Putting their own desires aside for the sake of their family's happiness, they are compelled to work extra hours (overtime).

The dreams they saw upon leaving the airport have made many families financially stable. However, the emotional void created by familial distance reaches its peak during festival times. Photos and videos of the village posted on social media ignite a deep longing in those abroad to return home. This Dashain, too, thousands of Nepalese will share joy from foreign soil while hiding their tears as they remember their country and families.
